About
Alamosa
|

|
The San
Luis Valley is over 80 miles long and 50 miles wide. Spectacular
mountain ranges surround the valley. On the west side, the San
Juans create the perfect backdrop for colorful sunsets.
|
 |
Looking
east, you’ll see the spiny Sangre de Cristo range, which
is among the tallest mountain ranges in Colorado. Mt. Blanca, in
the heart of the Sangre de Cristo’s, is the fourth tallest
mountain in the state. From
just about everywhere in the valley, you’ll have stunning
views of this beautiful mountain.
Alamosa,
with a population close to 8,000, is the largest city in the
San Luis Valley. Alamosa provides a home to Adams State College,
Trinidad State College, San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center
and hospital, shopping, and more. Alamosa is the hub of the valley.

In addition,
being in Alamosa puts you within minutes of:
- The amazing Great
Sand Dunes National Park, site of the largest sand dunes
on the North American continent.
- The Cumbres & Toltec
Scenic Railroad, known as one of the finest narrow gauge
railroads in the country.
- Two great golf
courses.
- The Wolf Creek
Ski area.
- Excellent hiking,
biking, camping, and hunting opportunities.
- Fantastic trout
fishing.
- World-class “Fourteener” mountain
climbing.
- Two natural hot
springs swimming pools.
- Awesome snowmobiling
and four wheeling areas.
Alamosa’s
central location makes it an ideal setting for those who enjoy
the amenities of big city life—occasionally! Alamosa is
within a four hour drive of both Denver and Albuquerque. Colorado
Springs and Santa Fe are less than three hours away. Durango,
Taos, Pueblo, Gunnison, and many other smaller cities are less
than two hours away.

In Alamosa,
you will enjoy four distinct seasons with over 350 days of sunshine
each year. At 7,544 feet in elevation, our summers are pleasantly
cool with a July average temperature of 65 degrees. Expect about
8 inches of moisture a year. Winters can be cold, but are generally
very sunny. In January, temperatures average about 17 degrees.
You’ll find winter driving conditions to be quite good.
Agriculture is the dominant industry in the valley. San Luis Valley potatoes
are delicious! Lettuce and spinach are also widely grown. Valley farmers
also grow high-quality barley.
